The South Kalimantan Initiative
A Sustainable Future through Promoting Green Energy Movement (Solar Energy, Solar powered E-Bike from recycled materials) and Effective Waste Management
Program Short Introduction:
It covers multiple aspects of sustainability, from climate change to waste management and renewable energy. Additionally, it’s a great mix of awareness-building and practical solutions
Key Issues Addressed:
1. Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Emissions:
Our community faces the threat of climate change, which has led to disasters such as floods, droughts, and landslides in recent years. These challenges are intrinsically tied to rising global temperatures caused by greenhouse gas emissions.
2. Environmental Sustainability:
Given its location along the Equator, South Kalimantan has a unique advantage in harnessing solar energy. This clean and renewable source of power aligns well with broader efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability.
3. Energy Independence:
Indonesia aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. A core strategy to achieve this ambitious goal is the adoption of green energy solutions. South Kalimantan can contribute significantly to this national objective by becoming a regional hub for renewable energy production and consumption. The goal for Indonesia is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, and part of that strategy involves adopting green energy sources.
4. Waste Management:
Mismanagement of waste has been a persistent issue in many communities, contributing to soil and water pollution. An educated approach towards effective waste management can drastically reduce these environmental impacts.
5. Food Security:
Due to climate-related disasters, local farmers have faced crop failures, endangering food security in the region.
6. Lifestyle Changes:
Climate change is not just a result of industrial emissions but also stems from lifestyle choices, such as the high consumption of meat which has a larger carbon footprint. Public awareness can lead to lifestyle changes that positively impact the environment.
Purpose of the Seminar:
- Increase awareness about the risks of climate change.
- To deepen the community’s understanding of the multi-faceted threats posed by climate change.
- To illustrate the benefits of effective waste management, both for the environment and local economy.
- To encourage the South Kalimantan community to live greener and use energy wisely.
- To educate the community about the importance and feasibility of switching to renewable forms of energy, particularly solar power, as a sustainable and economic alternative and the benefits it can bring.
- To discuss the consequences of poor waste management methods, thereby encouraging better practice.
It is cheaper not to pollute than to clean up:
- Cleaning takes enormous time to work
- Prevention is a much cheaper option
- Social value is added by not polluting
Expected Outcomes:
- Certificate of Participation to validate the community’s participation and engagement.
- After the seminar, we empower attendees with the knowledge needed to take meaningful actions, such as: Starting to sort their waste properly, Learning the basics of installing solar panels and Learning the basics of building a solar-powered e-bike from recycled materials.
- Introduce waste products like larvae that are high in protein and can be consumed safely.
- Introducing renewable energy certificates, specifically Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). These allow the solar energy generated by individuals to be converted into tradable certificates that can be sold in carbon markets, offering a financial incentive to adopt green technologies.
- Empower community members to be vocal about the urgent need for climate action, thereby creating a ripple effect that could extend to neighboring communities and even influence local policies.
Call to Action Plan:
- Inspire individuals to experiment with sustainable living concepts, like constructing their own solar-powered electric bikes or setting up solar panels at their residences.
- Encourage practical waste management activities (e.g.: 1-hour community clean-up)
- Encourage participants to observe their home and surroundings and start waste management from themselves
- Foster a culture of responsible waste management by sorting plastic waste independently and making use of local waste banks.
